It has been more than 25 years since our federal politicians unanimously vowed to end child poverty in Canada. Today, 1.3 million kids across the country are still living on very little.
However, the advocacy groups behind the report card see a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to change that as the Trudeau Liberals take over in Ottawa.
With the new federal government committed to a national poverty strategy, WE can change the legacy from one of failing to eradicate child poverty to one of enabling success for all FUTURE Canadians.
Poverty rates are THE WORST among children who in some way inherited to at least some degree; or whose parents “self-identify as being of at least partial migrant indigenous North American tribal blood; are from racialized communities, are in immigrant families, or in families affected by disability.
Even though First Nations communities long found the money available for the building of casinos and are presently considering building Liquefied Natural Gas depots; they are presently unable to find the money for decent housing or a safe potable water supply.
{Jul 21, 2015- BC Premier Christy Clark says the act sets the stage for "unprecedented levels of investment, job creation and economic activity. "The special summer legislative session was called July 13th to debate Bill 30 Which Gives the Province Authority to Enter into Liquefied Natural Gas Project Agreements. "British Colombians own this resource and we have ensured a fair return for current and future generations who will benefit significantly," said B.C. Finance Minister Michael de Jong. An energy industry group is warning that Canada's Natural Gas Industry Risks Decline Unless New Export Terminals Are Built. (CBC) With Bill 30 passed, B.C. can move ahead with the first LNG project, a $36-billion US dollar deal signed with Pacific NorthWest LNG. The project is forecast to create 4,500 jobs in the construction phase and estimate up to $8.6 billion by 2030 in tax and royalties. "We are creating a better future and a better British Columbia for our children and grandchildren said Natural Gas Development Minister Rich Coleman.}The costs are not unknown; about $20,000 just to cover basic SURVIVAL needs for one person man woman; ADULT OR CHILD; for 12 months. How many of Canada’s Senior citizens are ALLOWED that much?
The 2015 report card, entitled Let’s Do This: Let’s End Child Poverty for Good, offers policy recommendations for the new Liberal government, including boosting the new Canada Child benefit. That would reduce the child poverty rate by 50 percent, lifting over 650,000 children out of poverty,
Of course, FIRST, we must resettle 25,000 Syrian refugees- more FUTURE Canadians- by the end of the year (24 November 2015[but the offer COULD be limited to women, children and families]).
On top of the logistical costs of getting that many people into Canada are the millions, more it is going to require looking after their housing, health, education and integration requirements. ~Al (Alex-Alexander) D Girvan.
